Heritage conservation and research
Meditor Trust supports investigation and conservation of ancient city
The Trust has for some years researched how best to support heritage research, archaeology and preservation of ancient heritage, with a particular focus on Mesopotamia, the birthplace of human civilisation and developments such as writing, mathematics and the wheel. Careful investment is intended to also help build capacity in the heritage support infrastructure and generate benefits to the local economy.
The Sumerian city of Girsu is one of the world's earliest known cities. The site includes a palace, a temple and the world's oldest bridge. Meditor Trust is the funder of a major project involving the excavation, documentation, research, site-mapping and conservation of the Girsu site. It also supports the training of local archaeologists and conservators. It is hoped this work will enhance our understanding of this important ancient civilisation.
